Interior designers plan, design, and furnish the interior of private homes,
public buildings, and commercial establishments such as offices, restaurants,
hospitals, hotels and theaters, either as new construction or renovation.
With a client's tastes, needs and budget in mind, interior designers develop
designs and prepare working drawings and specifications for interior construction,
furnishings, lighting and finishes.
Interior design involves integrating the skills of an engineer and
an artist. Interior designers must know color, fabric, and furniture,
along with budget, materials, and communication. Interior designers
are not the same as interior decorators. Interior designers plan the space and furnish the interiors of private
homes, public buildings, and commercial establishments. They may also
plan additions and renovations. Designers work closely with architects
and clients to determine a style that best suits the structure of the
space and the needs of the client while working within the confines
of a specified budget.
Interior designers deal with technical engineering issues and aesthetic
design issues. Those who leave this field usually choose another area
involving aesthetic design. Many become interior decorators, graphic
designers, and computer graphics consultants. A notable few become architects.
Few leave the arena of aesthetic decision-making altogether.
They need to know about electrical capacity,
safety, and blueprints, because they will often visit the job site while
it is under construction. Interior decorators are involved
with the finishing elements of a home or building, while interior designers
work with architects during the construction phase of a building.
